As Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, Mira Murati played a crucial role in the development of ChatGPT and the DALL-E image generator, two groundbreaking AI technologies that defined innovation in 2023. Upon his return, Altman praised Murati for her leadership during a difficult time, saying that “OpenAI would not be OpenAI without her.” Murati’s main focus now is to continue to improve OpenAI’s products, and she’s the rare insider who has been outspoken about the need for greater regulation of AI. “We have philosophers and ethicists at OpenAI, but I really think there are big societal questions that shouldn’t be in the hands of technologists alone,” she told The Daily Show.
